In Mount Tambourine itself there are eight wineries, two breweries and a distillery all located within an 8 km strip. So whether you prefer a long drive to take in more of the sweeping views from the majestic mountainside lookouts, or you like to keep it close and cosy between your drinks, whatever you are in the mood for, your driver will be on standby, ready for your next move.
As locals who love wine, cheese, great food and know the value of a picturesque location to indulge, and perhaps snap a few souvenir pics; here are some of our favourite locations worthy of popping into on your wine tasting experience.
A stand out for many reasons, but when it comes to wine, Witches Creek Winery has received an award from the acclaimed James Halliday. Which puts it in the top 10 per cent of wineries in Australia, passion paired with superb local wine. You will not only learn more about the craft of viticulture, but your tastebuds will sing enjoying a selection of the wineries best. You can also “pick your own” cheese platter which can be enjoyed in the garden overlooking the vines, or nestled beside the fragrant flower arch of rambling jasmine.
Easily one of the prettiest wineries on Mount Tambourine. Cedar Creek Winery sits amidst 22 acres of sprawling countryside, with the babbling Cedar Creek and Wild Duck Lake to wistfully gaze over while enjoying Devonshire tea, lunch or sipping local wine. One of the largest selections of wines can be found at Cedar Creek Winery too, and if you feel like adding a side of nature to your adventure it is home to rare glow worms . You’ll likely spot other resident wildlife here including wallabies, lorikeets and perhaps a bouncing kangaroo or two. So make sure you keep your cameras handy.
Another location with postcard good looks and stunning views. Hampton Estate Winery is the white washed winery of your dreams, with a reclaimed church serving as a picturesque backdrop and flower filled gardens to roam. Their selection of wines will win over even the fussiest connoisseur, although if you are looking for something just as lovely, with a splash of botanicals, try a cocktail or a pop of pink with the pretty sparkling rosé. Desserts are a speciality here too, so make sure to save some room for sweets.
If wine is not your tipple you will not miss out when you are in control of your itinerary. Mount Tambourine is also home to one of Australia’s most awarded distilleries - Tamborine Mountain Distillery. With over 150 varieties of vodka, gin, schnapps, Eaux de Vie and delectable home made liqueur chocolates that will make you swoon.
A short wander away, you will find the famous fudge of Granny Macs, who love to encourage tasting. Plus there are plenty of arts, crafts, curios and souvenirs at the nearby Gallery Walk to buy and take home as a memento of your trip up the mountain too.
For the beer drinkers, two breweries call Mount Tamborine Mountain home, but the original and often regarded as the best is Fortitude Brewing Co. Pull up a seat in either the indoor or outdoor beer garden and order a tasting paddle so you can pick your favourite. There’s honest food too, plus, you will find Witches Chase Cheese right next door, which is always worth a nibble.
There are plenty more places to stop, and your driver will happily chat through any changes if you see something you like the look of, or a view you simply must add to your feed. But if you have had enough and you want to move on - that is perfectly fine too, with a private charter you are in control.
Depending on your timeline, we can suggest many more stops to consider. Take in the amazing views at Eagle Heights Hotel, and if you have time, walk down into the garden to find one of the best spots on the planet for a swing with views overlooking the famous Gold Coast coastline. On the other side of the mountain St Bernards Hotel is much loved by locals, and you will probably be met at the door by the namesake giant St Bernard dogs, who also like to laze by the fire in winter.
A fitting first or final stop before heading up or back down the mountain is the Fox and Hound Hotel. A fine example of the iconic British pub oozing with character, there is a selection of 7 beers and 3 ciders on tap. For something spicywe suggest you try the Foxy Lady Ginger Cider that is exclusively brewed locally for Fox and Hound. Or if you are looking for something hearty to eat, try traditional Yorkshire Puddings or one of the pubs luscious gravy lashed roasts.
Gold Coast Winery Tours can be booked to leave early and stay late depending on how many places you would like to visit. If you do have time to stay until sunset, Rotary Look-out is a perfect place to sit and watch the molten hues of the setting sun drift over the landscape and sink into the mountains of the greater Scenic Rim.
Cheers to that!
